"Black Friday" on Thursday kicks off holiday shopping

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Shoppers took advantage of retailers offering a Thursday night start to the traditional post-Thanksgiving holiday shopping season, lining up at stores to get deals on electronics and other items or to just see what the fuss was about.

This year, Target Corp joined Wal-Mart Stores Inc and Gap Inc in being open at least part of the day on Thursday and some retailers will be open throughout the day, a trend that began to take hold in 2011.

Wal-Mart's U.S. discount stores, which have been open on Thanksgiving Day since 1988, offered some "Black Friday" deals at 8 p.m. local time and special deals on some electronics at 10 p.m. Target has moved its opening from midnight to 9 p.m. on Thursday and Toys R Us is opening at 8 p.m.

"It's a recognition that retailers need to be more aggressive and want to show their physical stores are important," Moody's senior analyst Charles O'Shea said.

While he didn't see enormous crowds out in Vauxhall, New Jersey, he did see about 15 people lined up already at a Best Buy, which opens at midnight. At a Target in Westbury, only two shoppers were in line for a 9 p.m. opening. Still, for retailers, any crowd could make the effort worth it.

"It's a finite pie; if you can get a bit more by being open, then do it," O'Shea said.

The National Retail Federation, an industry trade group, forecast a 4.1 percent increase in retail sales during the November-December holiday period this year, down from the 5.6 percent increase seen in 2011.

Some retailers, like Best Buy Co Inc are keeping Black Friday on Friday, waiting until midnight to open.

At a Best Buy in Orlando, people had camped out in tents for days waiting for the doors to open.

Gabriel Esteves, 33, a self-employed car audio installer, waited in line with a bag of Cheetos and a Coke while his brother and sister went to their homes for Thanksgiving feasts with their families.

"They told me to take a break and go to the house, but today's the worst day to leave the line. People come and cut in line," said Esteves, who got in line Monday to buy some small electronics and a 50-inch television.

Best Buy, which is trying to stem falling sales under new CEO Hubert Joly, is one of the retailers in the spotlight this season.

At some stores, workers were not so happy to have early openings encroach on their Thanksgiving holiday. A petition asking Target to "save Thanksgiving" had 371,606 supporters as of Thursday afternoon.

Still, at a Target on Chicago's northwest Side, the first person waiting in line Thursday night was someone who worked at the store, Elsa Acevedo, 46, who finished her shift at 4:30 a.m. and lined up at about 2:30 p.m. to buy a 50-inch Westinghouse television.

As for the earlier opening, "I just think it takes people away from their families," she said. But she added that a midnight opening also pulled workers away from Thanksgiving celebrations because they had to prepare the stores to open.

Many shoppers lured into stores by earlier openings on Thursday may just be window-shopping.

More than 50 percent of consumers will do some form of "show-rooming" during the Black Friday weekend, said Kevin Sterneckert, vice president of retail research at Gartner Group.

"They will buy things because they looked at it in the store. They will touch and feel what they are interested in and then buy it online on Monday, either from the same retailer or a different online retailer," Sterneckert said.

At a Kmart on 34th Street in Manhattan earlier Thursday, Charles Montague, a 55-year-old mover, was browsing the aisles just to kill time.

"I don't holiday shop," he said emphatically. "I buy stuff all year long, not during some man-made holiday."

Some were not waiting for Monday to buy on the Internet. Online Thanksgiving 2012 sales were already up 17.8 percent over Thanksgiving 2011 for the same period, measured through 9 p.m. EST, according to IBM.

THE RESULTS MATTER

The stakes are high for U.S. retailers, which can earn more than a third of their annual sales in the holiday season.

Consumers heading into the holiday shopping season remain worried about high unemployment and possible tax increases and government spending cuts in 2013. Also, lasting effects of Sandy, the storm that lashed the densely populated East Coast in late October, could cut into how much shoppers can spend on the holidays.

According to a Reuters/Ipsos poll, two-thirds of shoppers said they were planning to spend the same amount as last year or were unsure about spending plans, while 21 percent intend to spend less and 11 percent plan to spend more.

"My family decided not to buy (Chanukah) presents this year - only for the kids. It's too expensive," said graduate student Danielle Slade, 29, from Jericho, Long Island.

Still, the Standard & Poor's retail index is up almost 27 percent this year, compared with a 10.6 percent increase for the broader S&P 500.

In New York's Times Square, a mix of locals and tourists lined up at Toys R Us.

"We just want to see what's happening," said a man who arrived Thursday from Paris. "We want to see what Black Friday is." A Santa hat-wearing expeditor quickly whisked him and his companion away before they could give their names.

Peter Molyneux's 22cans pitching Populousesque project on Kickstarter, 'Godus'

Peter Molyneux, like so many of you, pines for the glory days of the studio he co-founded over 15 years ago, Bullfrog Productions. His new studio, 22cans, today announced launched its first initiative aimed at recreating those glory days, with "Godus" -- a Kickstarter project to "recreate the god game." Of course, Molyneux and Bullfrog were partially responsible for the original invention as well, with PC classic Populous. Like with Populous, you'll control a virtual world and its people, building up (or tearing down) their society as you see fit; it seems the "re-invention" bit comes in the form of multiplayer and mobile play. The nascent studio of game industry vets is hoping for a seven to nine month turnaround on the project, post-Kickstarter (should it pass the £450,000 goal, that is), and it's planned for launch on "PC and mobile devices."

In the (hilarious) video 22cans included in its Kickstarter, the company revealed that its first title cum social experiment, Curiosity, already has "about 2 million downloads almost," which we'd certainly call a success. The ever self-aware Molyneux also notes in the video that, "I don't want to promise anything, I just want to deliver the glory of the old days in the new format of today's world." Even when he's trying not to promise something, he just can't help himself, eh? See for yourself below the break.

RG3 nearly perfect; Redskins beat Eagles 31-6

LANDOVER, Md. (AP) ? Robert Griffin III's perfect game was broken up by Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, who batted away a pass intended for Joshua Morgan late in the first half.

Otherwise, nothing the Washington Redskins rookie threw hit the ground. Fifteen attempts. Fourteen completions. Four touchdowns. Two hundred yards on the nose. Yet another game without an interception.

"Except for that one incompletion, I thought he was OK," coach Mike Shanahan deadpanned.

Griffin threw for a touchdown in every quarter ? 6 yards to Darrel Young, 49 to Aldrick Robinson, 61 to Santana Moss and 17 to Logan Paulsen ? and ran 12 times for 84 yards in Sunday's 31-6 win over the Philadelphia Eagles.

"I'm tired of talking about Robert," Moss said with a laugh. "Nothing's going to change; Robert's going to go out there and be special. That's the gift that he has, he's a special guy. He brings that kind of 'specialness.' I don't know if that's a word, but he brings it to our offense."

Moss might be running out of ways to extol Griffin's virtues, but he's certainly reaping the benefits. He has six touchdown receptions this season despite playing in a reduced role; no other Redskins receiver has more than two. He made Griffin look good by leaping between two defenders to make a catch and fighting his way into the end zone for his score in the third quarter, a throw that prompted an "oh, no ? oh, yes" reaction from Shanahan.

"There's a difference between playing fearless and being stupid," Griffin said. "You just have to be able to tiptoe that line. Now if it had been an interception, the pass would have looked stupid. But because it was a touchdown, it was fearless."

The game for last place in the NFC East left a thick line between the Redskins and Eagles. The win allows Washington (4-6) to feel like a playoff contender for at least a few more days, while Philadelphia (3-7) is doomed to spending six more weeks enduring endless questions about the future of the franchise.

"I don't know how it can get much worse," Eagles tight end Brent Celek said.

The Eagles have lost six straight, accelerating the countdown toward the possible end of Andy Reid's 14-year tenure as coach.

"I don't sense a lack of focus," said Reid, who declined to directly answer a question about his job security. "That's not what I sense. I see them playing hard. I see them focusing in at practice. At times, maybe we're trying too hard."

The Redskins, meanwhile, have a short week before heading to Texas for a Thanksgiving visit to the Dallas Cowboys. Washington had lost three in a row entering Sunday's game, but that's not enough to derail hopes of contending in a down year for the division.

"When things don't go your way, you just kind of get lost," right guard Kory Lichtensteiger said. "You get that sinking feeling again. And to be able to get out of that and get a win, it's going to do huge things for this next game and here on out ? because there's a feeling of 'Hey, we're back in this.'"

Lichtensteiger then paused and asked: "Did Dallas lose?"

The Cowboys, in fact, won. They pulled out an overtime victory over the Cleveland Browns to improve to 5-5. Still, it says something that the Redskins are able to do some meaningful scoreboard watching.

"It was a game we had to have," said Shanahan, who reversed himself a couple of weeks ago after initially indicating that the playoffs were out of reach.

The Redskins also finally found a formula for beating a rookie quarterback: force turnovers and have your own rookie play better. The defense got three takeaways and four sacks while facing Nick Foles, the third-round pick from Arizona who was making his first NFL start because Michael Vick is sidelined with a concussion.

Foles' first two drives ended with interceptions, putting the Redskins on their way to ending a remarkable eight-game losing streak against rookie quarterbacks that began in 2006. Foles completed 21 for 46 for 204 yards.

"That's the kind of football we've been wanting to play all year," said Washington linebacker Ryan Kerrigan, who had a sack, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. "And especially with Philly having a young quarterback, we wanted to really get after him."

NOTES: Eagles RB LeSean McCoy had 15 carries for 45 yards before being carted off in the final two minutes with a concussion. ... The Eagles have their longest in-season losing streak since dropping seven in a row at the end of 1994. ... Griffin has only three interceptions in 277 attempts this season. Foles already has three in just 78 attempts. ... Washington last beat a rookie quarterback on Dec. 24, 2005, a 24-9 win over Ryan Fitzpatrick and the St. Louis Rams. ... Washington S Brandon Meriweather, who had been sidelined with a left knee injury, had an interception but also hurt his right knee in the third quarter. He's expected to play against Dallas. ... Washington WR Pierre Garcon returned from a foot injury and caught three passes for 5 yards.

N.Y. police officer says not guilty of plan to cook, eat women

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A New York City police officer pleaded not guilty on Monday to conspiring to kidnap, torture, cook and eat women.

Gilberto Valle, 28, of Forest Hills, Queens, was charged and arrested in October with conspiring to cross state lines to kidnap the women and with illegally accessing a federal database.

Prosecutors said some of the women were acquaintances of Valle but it was not clear if he knew or had met all of them. Valle, who an official said had no prior criminal record, was not charged with carrying out any of his suspected plans.

At a brief hearing Monday in U.S. District Court in Manhattan, Valle's attorney, Julia Gatto, told the judge she would again seek to have her client freed on bail after two other judges previously denied her request.

Investigators uncovered a file on Valle's computer containing the names and pictures of at least 100 women, and the addresses and physical descriptions of some of them, according to the criminal complaint. It said he had undertaken surveillance of some of the women at their places of employment and their homes.

Gatto argues that Valle, a 6-1/2 year NYPD veteran, was all talk and should be released on bail.

The charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison.

The case is U.S. v. Gilberto Valle, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, No. 12-cr-847.

Saving is Sexy ? Saving and Budgeting Tips ? I Dare to Save, I Dare ...

What Does it Take to Save? What Does it Take to Blog?

It?s not the first time that my credibility or my credentials are being questioned just because I blog about personal finance. Well, me blogging in general. The first time I was questioned was when I blogged about?au pair scams. A former colleague bashed me on Facebook about how can I possibly be credible to talk about such topic when I haven?t been an au pair.

Simple. It doesn?t take rocket science to determine whether a letter comes from a legit family or from a group of people from Nigeria wanting to lure some of our fellow Filipinos in the hopes of better life in other countries. Take a look at these job offer letters and tell right before my face whether these letter are legit or not.

My intention was pure. I only wanted to warn people to prevent them from being scammed. Yet, some people just feel that need to judge me just because ?I didn?t have the ?credentials? to write about a topic.

I admit that I?ve never been an au pair and my former colleague became an au pair in various countries. She had first hand experience about the subject while I, on the other hand, hadn?t. She clearly had so much advantage, yet, she didn?t have the time nor the heart to warn others to stay away from these scams.

Obama, on Asia trip, first pays visit to Thailand

BANGKOK (AP) ? President Barack Obama on Sunday launched a three-day Southeast Asia tour, hailing alliances with countries such as Thailand as cornerstones of the administration's deeper commitment to the Asia-Pacific region.

While in Asia, however, Obama will be dividing his attention by monitoring the escalating conflict between Israel and the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip. Obama has been in regular contact with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as well as with Egyptian and Turkish leaders who might hold sway with the Hamas leadership.

Obama landed in Bangkok Sunday afternoon, greeted by 40 saluting military guards who flanked both sides of a red carpet.

His schedule is packed with sightseeing, a royal audience with King Bhumibol Adulyadej, a private meeting with Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, a joint press conference and an official dinner.

On a steamy day, Obama began with a visit to the Wat Pho Royal Monastery, a cultural must-see in Bangkok. In stocking feet, the president and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton walked around a golden statue of a sitting Buddha. The complex is a sprawling display of buildings with colorful spires, gardens and waterfalls.

Obama is also visiting Myanmar and Cambodia in his first trip abroad since winning a second term.

The visit to Thailand, less than 18 hours long, is a gesture of friendship to a long-standing partner and major non-NATO ally.

Still, the two countries have faced strains, most recently after the 2006 military coup that deposed Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, and Obama's visit offers an opportunity to restate and broaden the relationship.

"It was very important for us to send a signal to the region that allies are going to continue to be the foundation of our approach" to establishing a more prominent presence in Asia, deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes told reporters traveling with the president aboard Air Force One.

Obama is also seeking to open new markets for U.S. businesses; the United States is Thailand's third biggest trading partner, behind China and Japan. Becoming a counterweight to China in the region is a keystone of Obama's so-called pivot to the Asia-Pacific region.

Obama's trip comes on the heels of meetings in Thailand between Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta and his Thai counterparts on security and military cooperation on issues ranging from fighting weapons proliferation to disaster relief to countering piracy.

Alluding to the 2006 coup, Obama's national security adviser, Tom Donilon, said in a speech ahead of the trip last week that Obama would build on Panetta's outreach to reinforce the relationship and "support the continued peaceful restoration of democratic order after a turbulent period."

After his time at the temple, Obama was to pay a courtesy call to ailing 86-year-old, U.S.-born King Bhumibol Adulyadej in his hospital quarters. The king, the longest serving living monarch, was born in Cambridge, Mass., and studied in Europe.

The centerpiece of the Asia trip comes Monday when Obama travels to Myanmar, the once reclusive and autocratic state that has begun instituting democratic measures. Obama has eased sanction on the country, also known as Burma, and his visit will be the first there by a sitting U.S. president.

Obama aides see Myanmar as not only a success story but also as a signal to other countries that the U.S. will reward democratic behavior.

"If Burma can continue to succeed in a democratic transition, then that can potentially send a powerful message regionally and around the world...that if countries do take the right decisions, we have to be there with incentives," Rhodes said.

Jim Harbaugh: 49ers Head Coach Will Be on the Sidelines for Week 11 vs. Bears

San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh will be with his team for their Week 11 matchup against the Chicago Bears after dealing with a health issue earlier this week.

Per 49ers.com:

Jim Harbaugh underwent a procedure to treat an irregular heartbeat Thursday afternoon and still found time to watch part of the team?s practice in the same day.

The 49ers coach returned to his normal duties on Friday, but his players weren?t surprised to see their head man back to work so soon.

?That?s typical Harbaugh,? offensive lineman Daniel Kilgore said. ?We knew he wouldn?t be out long. You expect that from a man like Coach Harbaugh, as blue-collar as he is, a guy who hates to miss work ? we knew he?d be back today.?

Playing a well-rounded team like the Bears and having success would have been difficult for the 49ers without Harbaugh on the sidelines.

You want your coach to be there for every game, but especially against the league's top teams who may be playoff opponents later in the year.

The 49ers don't have an easy schedule as the season enters its final seven weeks. San Francisco still has to play quality opponents such as the Bears, New Orleans Saints, Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots.

Harbaugh has been a key part of the 49ers' resurgence over the last two years, which has brought late-season NFL excitement back to one of the league's most successful franchises.

After losing in the NFC Championship Game last season in overtime to the eventual Super Bowl champion New York Giants, the 49ers are once again an elite team in their conference.

San Francisco has the third-best record in the NFC and is well positioned for a second straight division title.

Thanks to Harbaugh's tremendous ability to motivate his players and have them fully prepared for each opponent, the 49ers will be one of the most difficult teams to beat in the NFL playoffs this season.

It's great to see the 48-year-old coach doing well and healthy for an important game against the NFC North leading Chicago Bears.

Annual Money Status Report of FHA Released to Congress | All ...

Annual Financial Status Report of FHA Released to Congress
The U.S. Office of Housing and Urban Improvement (HUD) these days unveiled its annual report to Congress for the money issue with the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) Mutual House loan Insurance plan (MMI) Fund. In reporting on findings on the unbiased actuarial examine, HUD suggests that when FHA continues to be impacted by losses from mortgages originated before 2009, this report doesn?t instantly have an effect on the adequacy of capital balances from the MMI Fund.
The impartial review found that because the housing market proceeds to get better, the funds reserve ratio from the MMI Fund accustomed to support FHA?s single friends and family house loan and reverse property finance loan insurance policies plans fell underneath zero to -1.forty four percent. This represents a bad economic price of $16.3 billion. This doesn?t signify FHA has inadequate hard cash to pay for insurance policy promises, a present functioning deficit, or will need to immediately attract money through the Treasury. The necessity to attract on Treasury cash is determined not through the economic assumptions of this actuarial evaluate but people employed while in the President?s FY 2014 finances proposal to become produced in February, that has a closing willpower on the prospective attract built in September. Also, the actuary?s estimate from the Fund?s financial benefit excludes $11 billion in anticipated capital accumulation from the conclusion of FY 2013. Finally, HUD?s report includes added steps designed to add billions of pounds in additional worth to your MMI Fund about the following various many years.
?FHA has weathered the storm from the modern economic and housing disaster by taking quite possibly the most ambitious and sweeping steps in its heritage to reform hazard management, credit score plan, loan company enforcement, and purchaser protections,? reported HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan. ?During this crucial time period in our nation?s financial record, FHA has offered use of homeownership for a large number of American people although helping deliver the housing marketplace back through the brink of collapse to the point wherever the outlook is positive and recovery is underway.?
FHA Acting Commissioner Carol Galante extra, ?While the financial loans produced throughout this Administration remain the best from the agency?s heritage, we just take the findings from the impartial actuary quite seriously. We?ll still consider ambitious techniques to shield FHA?s fiscal health and fitness though making sure FHA carries on to conduct its historic position of supplying entry to homeownership for underserved communities and supporting the housing marketplace all through hard economic instances.?
Several aspects are driving the improve in FHA?s place when compared to last year:
First, the house-price appreciation forecasts used for this actuarial review are appreciably reduced than others used in last year?s report, to be the genuine turnaround within the housing marketplace happened afterwards than was projected past yr. These house-price appreciation estimates usually do not involve enhancements to property rates that occurred given that June and had been frustrated by a higher level of refinance activity.
2nd, the ongoing decrease in fascination costs, though excellent to the total overall economy, expenditures the FHA earnings as its debtors pay off their home loans to refinance into reduce premiums. Once more, this is certainly plainly a optimistic, but it impacts the actuary?s estimate in the worth of the Fund. Additionally, the actuary predicts that debtors with increased desire fees who will be struggling to refinance will default at larger than standard premiums, growing losses from foreclosures for FHA.
Third, based on suggestions created by the federal government Accountability Place of work (GAO), HUD?s Inspector General and other folks, FHA directed the actuary to utilize a refined methodology this year to far more specifically predict how losses from defaulted loans and reverse home loans are mirrored inside the financial worth of the MMI Fund.
HUD is saying a series of adjustments which can be designed to construct on past ways which have improved the wellness in the Fund. Along with the actuary?s expectation of $11 billion in supplemental money from new company in fiscal 2013, these changes are meant to return FHA?s cash reserves to a optimistic placement throughout the yr and likewise decrease the likelihood that FHA would need to work out its authority, which all federal loan and mortgage guarantee programs have, to draw money from the Treasury in September to protect estimated losses. To perform this, FHA will:

Always offer expanded pools of defaulted home loans headed for foreclosure throughout the Distressed Asset Stabilization Course (DASP), offering investors and borrowers the opportunity to prevent high priced foreclosures ? and even supplying home owners yet another opportunity at staying in their households ? even though lessening charges to the Fund. The FHA is committing to offer at the least 10,000 distressed loans for each quarter in excess of the following 12 months;
Revise its loss mitigation program to target deeper levels of cost reduction for struggling debtors, enabling additional people to retain their residences and avoid foreclosure, lowering linked losses to FHA;
Increase the use of short-sales, that could supply opportunities for distressed debtors who may have been unable to get out from under hundreds of numerous pounds of home finance loan financial debt to maneuver to the new job or start off anew while bettering recoveries for FHA. Foreclosures are expensive, for households along with the Fund. By cutting down the chance that a family members will be foreclosed upon, we cut down costs for the Fund;

Still streamline procedures to extend efficiency and decrease losses linked using the sale of foreclosed attributes;

Reverse a policy created inside a prior Administration to cancel necessary top quality repayments after a selected periodthat effectively designed that when FHA?s 100% insurance protection assure remained in impact to the 30-year daily life of a financial loan, borrowers have been only expected to pay for rates for less than 10 years. FHA continues to be left without the need of premiums to deal with losses on loans held further than the period of time for which it collects rates. This change will utilize to new financial loans.
In 2013, enact an increase of 10 basis factors or 0.one percent to the annual insurance protection premium paid out by borrowers on new FHA loans. This high quality boost is be expecting to add $13 per thirty day period for the common borrower and can enhance FHA?s money situation devoid of limiting entry to credit for experienced borrowers.
Losses on financial loans insured involving Fiscal Many years 2007 and 2009 always place a significant strain for the Fund with $70 billion in FHA claims attributable to loans insured in all those many years. Though they had been prohibited in 2009, the continued impact of ?seller-funded downpayment aid loans? remains significant. The net predicted cost of all those loans, as projected because of the impartial actuaries, is more than $15 billion. By distinction, the actuary found that the FHA?s publications of company because FY2010 are predicted being quite valuable, supplying billions of bucks in net revenues to offset losses on before textbooks. Under the base-case projection in the unbiased actuary, FHA?s FY2013 e book ought to include an additional $11 billion in economic benefit towards the Fund.
Given that having workplace in 2009, the Obama Administration has instituted sweeping reforms to enhance the MMI Fund. New procedures have improved personal loan high-quality, strengthened loan company enforcement, and better top quality revenues. It has been the most thorough update to FHA credit score guidelines, risk management, lender monitoring, and client protections in its historical past, including a lot more than $20 billion in benefit into the Fund.
About the earlier year, FHA has been:
Essential to our Housing Restoration, insuring one.two million single-family mortgages having a principal equilibrium of $213 billion. This was marginally significantly less than exercise during the prior Fiscal Yr; order mortgage loan exercise was down seven percent although refinance activity grew by seven percent;
A necessary Method to obtain Credit for First-Time Homebuyers. Endorsed somewhere around 734,000 order home loans, with 78 % to first-time homebuyers;
Supporting Family members Refinance and Preserve. Facilitated over 451,000 refinance transactions, letting home owners to take advantage of minimal curiosity prices and conserving them $220/mo. whilst reducing chance of the fund;
Furnishing Security to Seniors. Insured 54,000 reverse house loan transactions for seniors looking for to age set up;

Necessary to Minority Homebuyers. FHA accounted for fifty percent of property buy mortgages for African American debtors and 49 % for Hispanic/Latino borrowers.

(AP Photo/Mamdouh Thabet)

ASSIUT, Egypt (AP) ? A speeding train crashed into a bus carrying children to their kindergarten in southern Egypt on Saturday, killing at least 49, officials said. Distraught families searched for signs of their loved ones along the tracks and angry villagers berated officials in the aftermath of the latest disaster to hit the country's railway system.

The bus was carrying more than 50 children ages four to six when it was hit near al-Mandara village in Manfaloot district in the province of Assiut, a security official said. He said it appeared that the railroad crossing was not closed as the train sped toward it.

Egypt's railway system has a poor safety record, mostly blamed on decades of badly maintained equipment and poor management.

Books, school bags and children's socks were strewn along the tracks near the blood-stained, mangled bus. Parents of the missing wailed as they looked for signs of their children. An Associated Press reporter at the scene said many of the remains were unrecognizable.

A woman who called herself Um Ibrahim, a mother of three, was pulling her hair in distress. "My children! I didn't feed you before you left," she wailed. One witness said the train pushed the bus along the tracks for nearly a kilometer (half mile).

As one man picked up a body part he screamed: "Only God can help!" Two hospital officials said between seven and 11 wounded were being treated in two different facilities, many with severed limbs.

All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

Accidents traced to negligence regularly left scores dead during the rule of ousted President Hosni Mubarak, who was accused of valuing loyalty over competence in many appointments of senior officials. Widespread corruption under his three decades in power has also been blamed for the underfunding of government services, particularly in poor provinces outside Cairo.

The railway's worst disaster took place in February 2002 when a train heading to southern Egypt caught fire, killing 363 people. Media reports quoted official statistics saying that the rail and road accidents claimed more than 7,000 lives in 2010.

This is the worst such tragedy since the country's first freely elected president, Mohammed Morsi, took office this summer. Egypt's Transport Minister Mohammed el-Meteeni resigned in the wake of the crash, the state news agency reported, but some activists have accused Morsi of continuing the mistakes of his predecessor.

Morsi said in a short televised address from his office that he had tasked the state prosecutor with investigating the crash. "Those responsible for this accident will be held accountable," he said.

But some activists who helped engineer last year's uprising against Mubarak said that government negligence toward citizens is no longer acceptable.

"President Mohammed Morsi is responsible and must follow up personally," one such movement, the April 6 group, said in a statement. "He is the one who chose this failed government whose disasters increase day after day."

In a heated discussion on one of the state-owned radio stations, callers and the presenter expressed outrage and demanded an immediate overhaul and modernization of the train system. Like most government bodies, employees at the Ministry of Transportation complain of poor pay and poor working conditions.

Earlier this week, metro workers went on strike to protest their working conditions, inadequate equipment and management.

Saturday's accident comes one week after two trains collided in another southern province, killing four people. Some of the country's train accidents are blamed on an outdated system that relies heavily on switch operators instead of assistance from technology.

Residents in Assiut complained that there were not enough ambulances in the area that could respond quickly enough and that the ambulances themselves were ill-equipped to deal with the emergency.

At al-Mandara village, angry families and locals gathered near the tracks, shouting at officials. Some chanted: "Down with Morsi!"

Sheik Mohammed Hassan, a villager, said the government should be paying more attention to its domestic problems instead of focusing its attention to the violence in neighboring Gaza.

"The blood of people in Assiut is more important than Gaza," he said.

Drowsy driving accidents growing | Washington State Patrol

Drowsy driving, or sleepiness, has been identified as a factor in a growing number of automobile crashes.?As with the dangers of speeding, drinking and driving, and not wearing seatbelts, drowsy driving is just as devastating and dangerous.

Drowsy driving has serious consequences on our highways. It impairs driver?s reaction time, judgment, vision, awareness of surroundings and decision making.?Warnings signs include: trouble keeping your eyes open and head up, difficulty focusing, yawning repeatedly, and missing exits or traffic signs.

?Falling asleep at the wheel is as preventable as collisions that are caused by speeding and drinking and driving,? said Chief John Batiste, Washington State Patrol. ?People need to take the necessary precautions to prevent sleepiness as a needless cause of deaths and injuries.?

In 2010, 16 motorists were killed and 60 were seriously injured in Washington State because of drowsy driving.?According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, each year at least 1,550 deaths and 71,000 injuries are a result of drowsy driving.

Drowsy driving is such an important issue it prompted Washington State Governor Chris Gregoire to sign a proclamation.?In it, she urges all Washington State citizens to join her in observing national Drowsy Driving Prevention Week (DDPW) November 12-18, 2012.

The DDPW campaign was developed to educate young drivers, their parents and others about drowsy driving and its prevention.?The AAA Foundation estimates that about one in six deadly crashes nationwide involves a drowsy driver.?In fact, The National Sleep Foundation?s 2011 poll found that about one in ten 16-45 year old drivers report driving drowsy once or twice a week.

The Washington State Patrol wants to remind drivers to take the necessary precautions to avoid drowsy driving or falling asleep at the wheel by following these steps:

  • Get a good night?s sleep before hitting the road
  • Don?t be too rushed to arrive at your destination
  • Take a break every two hours or 100 miles to refresh
  • Use the buddy system to keep you awake and share driving chores
  • Avoid alcohol and medications that cause drowsiness as a side effect
  • Avoid driving when you would normally be sleeping

For more information about drowsy driving and how to prevent it visit SleepFoundation.org, DrowsyDriving.org, AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Always Prepped Grabs $650K From True Ventures, Former Blackboard EVP To Launch A Mint.com For Education

logo_always_preppedIn what is the most-watched TED Talk to date, Sir Ken Robinson makes perhaps the most convincing case for why the educational system in the U.S. needs to be torn down and rebuilt: It stifles creativity. Given the current state of affairs, making creativity the linchpin of a new school system does sound almost radical. Sadly. Be that as it may, Robinson is far from being alone in his belief that the current system revolves around inflexible curricula and churning out standardized test-taking drones, rather than free-thinking individuals. It's for this reason that personalized learning has become one of the hottest topics in education and is often cited as the key to re-humanizing education.

AP PHOTOS: Impacts of the Gulf oil spill

BP has agreed to pay a $4.5 billion settlement with the U.S. government over the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. BP's Deepwater Horizon rig, 50 miles off the Louisiana coast, sank in an explosion on April 20, 2010, spewing crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico, killing wildlife and shutting vast areas of the Gulf to commercial fishing for months.

Here's a look back at some of the impacts:

OIL

The Macondo wellhead released 210 million gallons of oil during the spill. Of that, 172 million gallons were released directly into the Gulf of Mexico, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

DEATHS AND INJURIES

The Deepwater Horizon explosion killed 11 rig workers and injured 17 others. Two BP well-site leaders have now been charged with manslaughter and a BP executive has been indicted on charges he lied to authorities.

WILDLIFE

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service officials documented 6,104 dead birds, 609 dead sea turtles and 100 dead mammals, including dolphins, from the impacted area. Experts also collected 456 living sea turtles and 2,079 birds that were visibly oiled.

ECOSYSTEM

The oil soiled sensitive tidal estuaries and beaches, severely affecting the edges of saltwater and brackish marshes. Sand beaches, barrier islands, tidal mud flats and mangrove stands in five coastal states were damaged.

ECONOMY

Sullied waters and health concerns shut down commercial fishing in the region for months, putting thousands of shrimpers and fishermen out of work. Charter captains, property owners, environmental groups, restaurants, hotels and other tourism businesses all claimed they suffered economic losses after the spill.

RESPONSE AND CLEANUP

At the peak of the crisis, the response effort involved 48,200 people, 9,700 vessels and 1.8 million gallons of chemical dispersants. The Coast Guard helped burn 265,450 barrels of oil using controlled fires.

But if there seems to be an ocean of news out there, a decreasing number of newsrooms are producing it. Much of what looks like news is recycled from a few primary sources (mostly newspapers) and fluffed out with celebrity and sports items. That would be OK if serious news came along for the ride. But increasingly, serious news is being left behind.

Newspaper editors always knew that serious news needed clever packaging to get in front of readers? eyes. They put stories about crimes and lost dogs on Page 1. They assembled teams of opinionated sports-writers and ran pages of comics and games, tips for handymen and homemakers, advice columns for lonely hearts, and horoscopes for the proudly gullible.?

They knew you had to buy a newspaper to get coupons, classified ads, and TV listings. In the process, they also slipped in news from the school board, statehouse, and city council.?

Most people didn?t read what news wags called ?DBIs,? dull but important stories. But some key people did: politicians, civil servants, activists, prosecutors, thought leaders, and other journalists. As Jessica Bruder shows in a recent report in the Monitor Weekly, that small but influential group was often enough to focus attention on a problem, expose wrongdoing, and push for reform.?

And that?s the way it was. A reader bought a bundle of news each morning, sugar and spinach included. As journalism analyst Clay Shirky put it, newspapers ?supported the minority of journalists reporting actual news for the minority of citizens who cared. In return, the people who followed sports or celebrities, or clipped recipes and coupons, got to live in a town where the city council was marginally less likely to be corrupt.?

Now, the Internet is relentlessly unbundling news. The journalism compact has broken down ? most obviously in the United States, but the same forces are at work around the world.

Some news organizations are trying to cope by charging Internet readers. (The Monitor currently doesn?t charge for Internet content.) But so-called paywalls bring about a new dilemma. Note, for instance, what happened as hurricane Sandy approached the East Coast in late October.

The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and others dropped their paywalls as a public service. Among others, media-watcher Mathew Ingram of GigaOM.com pointed to ?the tension between the public purpose that many media outlets feel they have ? to spread important information as widely as possible to those affected by it ? and the need to commercialize that information in order to make money.??

To put it another way: Are hurricanes of public importance but not the school board, statehouse, and city council??

Reconciling money and mission is a huge challenge for news organizations, the Monitor included. And as our cover story makes clear, it?s not just journalists who have a stake in this.

John Yemma is editor of the Monitor.?
