A CUSTOMER was not allowed to carry a tray of soft drinks in a restaurant ? because of ?health and safety?.
Stunned Tim Bannister, 35, was told he needed special TRAINING to balance the four glasses on the tray.
He was so incensed by the rule he complained to Government watchdogs ? who agreed that it was ?stupid? and had nothing to do with safety.
The incident came when Tim met friends for lunch at a waterside restaurant called Nautical Nellies in Southampton.
He said he would carry a tray of drinks only a few yards to their table because the waitress was busy ? but was amazed when his offer of help was turned down. Tim, a technical adviser at chemicals firm AkzoNobel, said: ?It was embarrassing but also laughable.
?I have a responsible job and don?t appreciate being told I can?t handle a tray without training.
?Health and safety is about keeping people safe and stopping them dying. We have a cotton wool society these days."
Tim contacted the Health and Safety Executive, whose Myth Busters Challenge Panel was set up by the Coalition to fight just such barmy rules.
HSE chief Judith Hackitt: ?It?s important that we are all ready to challenge stupid decisions made in the name of health and safety.?
A spokeswoman for the Universal Marina near Southampton said Nautical Nellies had since closed down. Its former owners could not be contacted.
