Council asks mayor for dog park explanation

SHREVEPORT, La. -

After a couple of days of rain, many dog owners in the area were finally able to let their four-legged friends get some exercise.

Kunal Maur heads to Hamel Memorial Park in Shreveport whenever possible to let his dog, Parker, stretch her legs.

"We like to take her out to the local parks," Maur said. "There's plenty of open space to bring her out and have her running around. It would be great if there were a dog park area so we could let her off the leash."

But the funding for a dog park at Hamel Park is still tied up at city hall. And Shreveport Mayor Cedric Glover has refused to sign a cooperative endeavor agreement to accept $280,000 from the Red River Waterway Commission to construct the park.

So Shreveport City Council Chairman Michael Corbin (Dist. D) has formally asked the mayor to provide a written report detailing his opposition. He's also asked the mayor to form a committee of concerned parties to look at how to move forward.

What's the next step if the mayor continues to ignore the council's vote to accept funding?

"The mayor has plainly stated to anyone who asks that he has no intention of signing it," said Corbin. So that leaves: "The council could take legal action against the mayor. The Dog Park Alliance could do that. A citizen could do that."

Cynthia Keith with the Shreveport Dog Park alliance says the group has been in contact with legal counsel and will consider taking Mayor Glover to court to compel him to sign the agreement.

Mayor Glover did not respond to requests for comment about this story.
