Bill Hand: Fireworks in a football field

This is going to be one of those history columns where I tell you my history instead of New Bern?s. It happens once in a while; get used to it.

It?s also going to be one of those columns where I tell you what I did, and then insist you never, ever be stupid enough to do it yourself. That?s irritating, I know. My father used to constantly regale me with the wild tales of his misspent youth, and then threaten me with murder if I followed his path. So any mean ladies with barrels of rancid, algae-splotched rainwater by their house, your carpets are safe with me!

It was while watching the fireworks last Thursday that this little reminiscence entered my mind.

I spent my elementary years in a little Pennsylvania village named Townville, population today, 306. My father, a Methodist preacher, had a double-charge (that is, two churches) at Townville and Troy Center. I have only one memory of the Troy Center congregation ? an unpleasant one involving grown men hurling baby mice I had discovered at women. I?m not going to go into this particular story, but I?ll bet it?s already left you thinking differently of Methodist men.

I remember Townville as the first place where I dialed a phone. I was probably in fourth grade, a ridiculously old age for a kid to be dialing a phone for the first time in his life, and I had been sent to the little grocery to buy something. I couldn?t remember what it was, so I asked if I could use the phone. The grocer pushed the phone my way, and I dialed, then picked up the receiver. The line was dead. Confused, I set the receiver back in its cradle, dialed, then picked up the receiver again and wondered why the line was still dead. The grocer probably wondered what planet I was from. And a lot of young people reading this right now are thinking, ?Phone cradles? Phone receivers? What is this walking antiquity talking about??

After only a couple of years, I moved out of Townville. Methodist preachers were shipped around every couple of years in those days, or maybe my father requested a move because he was freaked out by flying mice.

But I made a couple of my closest lifelong friends in those days ? Kevin and Vance. So I went back when I could to visit.

Zoom ahead ? I can?t remember to just when, but we had graduated and were young adults. We thought it would be a hoot to do a midnight walk to the local high school, just outside of town, where Kevin had played football and shoot the breeze. Once there, we found the football field?s broadcast booth wasn?t as secure as it might be, so we broke in, opened a window and looked over the field.

It was a narrow building, about six or eight feet deep and maybe 16 or 20 feet long.

It must have been around July because Vance pulled out a huge string of powerful firecrackers. We started lighting them, one at a time, and throwing them out the windows. We got a kick out of watching them bounce around the iron bleachers down below and hearing the echoey booms.

I don?t remember who did it, but we hadn?t thrown many when one missed the window, bounced back into the room and landed? right on top of this crazy-long string of firecrackers.

There was nowhere to go; we were trapped in this tiny space with a monster string of explosives about to go off.

Strings of exploding firecrackers are living things, by the way. They writhe about like snakes and this one seemed to follow us everywhere as it banged and boomed. We three guys did a breakdance, a river dance and maybe even the Funky Chicken just trying to stay alive.

When it was over, we still had our fingers and skin, but the floor and lower walls had plenty of charred spots and we were almost deaf from the sound of the explosions bouncing off those close walls.

We pushed open the door and staggered out through the cloud of blue, acrid smoke that floated into the night. Because we were pretty young, because we were stupid and because we were guys, we laughed about it all the way back to Kevin?s home.

And children take note: We were lucky we didn?t burn down Pennsylvania and that we escaped with our lives.

Oil Field Catering Will Be a Growing Business in the Cline

?

LexisNexis

July 2, 2013 Tuesday

With an expected influx of perhaps thousands of workers, area restaurants are gearing up for what's to come with the Cline Shale oil boom by expanding their catering capabilities to include oil field services.

The idea of food catering to drilling and hydraulic fracturing or fracking sites is rapidly picking up steam in Abilene, a city many energy experts say will play a big part in the oil play. Oil field catering has become a very lucrative business in the Permian Basin to the west and Eagle Ford Shale to the south.

Motorists passing going south from Abilene on U.S. Highway 277 may have noticed a big sign in front of Texas Steak Express advertising its newest service: oil field catering.

The kind of service isn't new to the restaurant chain. Its stores in Midland and Odessa are experiencing growth due to catering at job sites. Those locations have been servicing the oil fields in the Permian for four years at a frequency of at least three times a week.

"We've been doing (other) catering since we opened (in Abilene) but since (the Cline Shale) is here now, we're trying to let them know we can service them," Robert Cano, Steak Express' director of operations, said Tuesday. "Especially where (oil rigs) are located: It's not easily accessible to food, that's why they call us out there to feed them so they can stay on the job and keep going."

Twelve-hour oil field shifts mean there isn't much time spent away from the job so many oil companies are using restaurants to cater meals as often as budgets allow, according to a recent a report. For instance, Oklahoma City-based Chesapeake Energy, a major stakeholder in the Cline, often uses catering services to feed crews working on its rigs in South Texas.

Abilene's Steak Express is not new to site catering. It often get called out to service workers at wind farms in Taylor and Nolan counties. Cano said the restaurant consistently served food during the height of turbine construction some years ago.

Joe Allen's Pit Bar-B-Que have done some oil field catering in the Midland-Odessa area, and its owner, Josh Allen, said he hopes to do a similar service in the Cline Shale area.

"I've had a couple of calls (in Abilene) from some perspective clients about doing some (catering within the Cline) and I'm just kind of waiting to hear back from them and be ready to rock and roll," Allen said. "I've done some oil field catering in the Midland-Odessa area and one of them was a gas plant they had just built outside of Big Spring."

Exploration and production companies often have food catered during the hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, stage of a well process because that is when the most people are on site at the same time. Depending on the size and depth of the well, the process can require between 25 and 90 people on site at any given time.

Lytle Land and Cattle Co. is ready to tackle the added business, its assistant manager, Gabe Stokes, said.

"We have not done (oil field catering) simply because we have not been contacted by any company, but if they contact us, we will definitely get into that," Stokes said.

"Anywhere we can get to and anywhere anybody needs us to go," Elaine Vinson, catering coordinator for Sharon's Barbeque and Catering, said. "If we can get access to where they need it we can get the food there."

The Masterplan and Me: Walk To The Beach

Looking back on the blog and I realised that we had made a trip to London at a very similar time last year.?London and Late Nights?Only two days in it considering our Madam Tussauds trip Sunday just gone.

Agent S (Twinbo 1) decided to read up on America this morning. This has come on the back of her wanting to brush up on her overall Geographical knowledge. Sat at the table using the laptop she looked so resourceful and up to date with our times. Thanksgiving was her decided sub-topic and she even wrote some notes on paper. I wondered why her writing didn't look as tidy as it normally does but she informed me that she's practicing a style of joined up writing. OK then.

Twinbo 2 set about his History curriculum and I must say how mature his written answers appeared today.

Twinbo's 3 and 4 set about drawing family portraits followed by about 10 minutes of Lord of The Rings writing, a game of Dress Up Who on the laptop and then helping me with a few batches of Scones.

After lunch we took a fairly long walk to the other end of the beach front to see if our home ed friends were still there (they had planned a Beach picnic get together today), and they were. The largest group on the beach. A fairly quick social for us with toe dipping, card games and a chat and we made the walk back in anticipation of Twin Dad arriving home.

I made a fish pie (rather good I might add), marinaded some chicken for tomorrow and we all had a surge of tidying up before Twin Dad walked through the door.

It's all change again apparently.

The girls have dragged Daddy out for bike riding beach front fun, the eldest are Minecrafting and I've poured a vodka cranberry.

Viber Is Testing New Revenue Models, Value-Add Features By Integrating With Traditional Telephony

viberViber has just confirmed to TechCrunch that it is running an extremely limited test that would allow Viber to act as a "call terminator" — which refers to the carrier that offers the last (and most expensive) leg of an international call's three-part process. Along with offering Viber the ability to add new features to the free calling/messaging app, over 200 million users strong, this would also offer the Israeli-based startup an opportunity to monetize its entirely free service.

New roaming caps introduced into European Union member countries, data prices the big winner

Good news this morning for travellers within the EU; new caps have been introduced on how much mobile carriers can charge for roaming within member countries. Roaming charges have been a topic of much debate in recent years, especially with the rise of the smartphone, but the regulators have stepped in to control what users have to pay. It's not the first time caps have been introduced, but this is what things look like as of now:

  • Price cap from data reduced from 70 cents per MB to 45 cents
  • Making a call reduced from 29 cents to 24 cents
  • Receiving a call reduced from 8 cents to 7 cents
  • Sending an SMS reduced from 9 cents to 8 cents

The most significant drop is seen in the cost of data, which is good news since data roaming is also the largest cause of massive bills from foreign travel. Eventually, roaming charges are expected to be abolished completely within the EU, but for now this is a positive step in the right direction. Travellers; good news? Or not quite enough for you yet?

This Bottle Opener-Stopper Combo Is Flash Gordon's Only Bar Tool

This Bottle Opener-Stopper Combo Is Flash Gordon's Only Bar Tool

You may already have a bottle stopper and you surely already have a bottle opener, but chances are neither of them look quite this awesome. Bottlejak is sleek, raygun-esque combo tool with a CNC machined solid aluminum body for opening bottles and a CNC-machined solid stainless steel plug for closing them. It's not messing around.

Bottlejak's on Kickstarter for the moment, and at a starting price of $42 it's just slightly more expensive than whatever's hanging out in your junk drawer right now. But damned if it isn't prettier too. [Kickstarter via Cool Material]
