SAN MARTIN, Calif. (AP) — After a year spent traveling the world, Brooks Koepka suddenly is in a position to play a lot more golf at home.
Koepka surged to the top of the leaderboard Friday in the Frys.com Open with a 7-under 64. He had a two-shot lead among the early finishers at CordeValle.
The 23-year-old Floridian had no status at the start of the season and decided to work his way up through the Challenge Tour in Europe. He won three times to earn a full European Tour card. If he were to win the Frys.com Open — his first start in a regular PGA Tour event — Koepka would have a PGA Tour card, too.
He was two shots ahead of Robert Garrigus (63) and Jim Herman (66).
